I took a longer time then promised, but we must not be greedy, it’s ramadan and everything works slower or even stops for a break, LTT actualy started to plant Wimax stations all over Tripoli, and some companies in Dahra are actually beta testing the Wimax service, the information leaked in Libyan forums says that the price will be 50 LYD for a speed of 1MB/S and that the speed rate could be up to 16MB/S, anyway this still rumor yet we need to wait to know how much really it’s going to cost and is it really as fast as 1-16MB/s.

Ubuntu Made A Great Success In Libya
September 10, 2008
If you don’t know what is Ubuntu it’s an operating system based on Debian, a Linux distrbutiong known for it’s friendly user interface so if you are familiar with Windows, using Ubuntu wouldn’t be a problem, as you all know that 98% of Libyan people uses Windows and the rest uses Mac OS and Linux.
I’ve met lot of people already using Ubuntu, some thinks it’s great and some thinks it’s usless “They don’t know how to use it in fact”, but I did my duty as a computers and science freak and spread the word by donating Ubuntu Cd’s to all of my friends and some of my workmates.
If you didn’t try it yet, I recommend that you download your free copy, burn to to a CD and install the thing in your machine, you can also find it in some shops around Tripoli 2 or 3, they are selling and that’s not spoused to happen, it’s a free open source project.
Or just request a free CD, yes they deliver it to Libya also for free.
here is a video of Ubuntu in action “To get 3d effects you need enable compiz”:
And yes I am the biggest fan.

Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky signed on behalf of the United States, and Ahmed S. Fituri, Secretary of Americas Affairs at the General People’s Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation, signed on behalf of Libya. The U.S.-Libya Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement is the first official bilateral agreement signed between the two countries since re-establishment of relations in 2004.The new agreement provides a mechanism through which the United States and Libya can broaden cooperation in all scientific and technology fields, and move forward in areas of on-going collaboration such as public health, water resources, and space and upper atmospheric science. It is designed to support government-to-government exchanges, scientific partnerships between private, academic, and non-governmental entities, and the establishment of science-based industries and promotion of jobs. The Agreement establishes a framework to facilitate exchange of scientific results and provide protection for intellectual property rights, and will also help establish a regional dialogue on important science issues, such as the protection of the environment and the management of shared resources.
The Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement is an important step in recognizing Libya’s historic renunciation of weapons of mass destruction and positive re-engagement with the international community. It is also a component of U.S. efforts to promote peace and stability in the Maghreb region of Africa and broadening U.S.-Libya bilateral relations.

An Angry Blogger Attacks LTT

SAGEM F@st™ 2400/2404 ADSL modem security thread in Libya
August 9, 2008When you subscribe to this service your phone line is connected to the LTT’s equipments which are located through out the phone company’s switches, which enables you accessing the Internet and making phones calls at the same time. We’ll supply you with ADSL modem that you can use to connect your PC to the Internet.
Nowadays they even provide you with a Sagem Modem that have wireless and network ports so it’s also a router and an access point, that’s great but it is a security thread since not all clients will secure the wireless with an access key.
This is a big problem since anyone can connect to your router may be your neighborhood and steal your bandwidth and so your money, even if you don’t care about people using your internet you must care about them playing in your setting, that wouldn’t be nice, as they can also steal your login and password that LTT provided you in the contract.
If you have this router as seen on the image:

SAGEM F@st™ 2400 / 2404
then please follow these steps to secure and protect your internet connection.
1- In your web browser type in: “http://myrouter” and press “Enter”
2- If you didn’t setup a password before type in username: “admin” and password: “admin” as it’s the default user name and password.
3- Go to wireless setting.
4- Click on generate to generate a random password “You must be connected using LAN since this will disconnect you if you are over wireless and you wont see the new password”, Or type in a manual password like your phone number that’s an easy thing to guess lol.
Thats all for now, best regards.
Phoenicia Group and CapRock Communications Enter Strategic Alliance to Tap Libya VSAT Market
August 8, 2008TRIPOLI, Libya – June 19 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Phoenicia Group, (www.phoenicia.ly), the leading U.S.-Libyan diversified business and consultancy group, today announced a strategic alliance with CapRock Communications to provide end-to-end VSAT connectivity products and solutions to the oil and gas industry in Libya.
VSAT, or Very Small Aperture Terminal, is a satellite based communications system capable of providing Internet connectivity without cable-based infrastructure, ideal for the oil and gas industry, where exploration and production activities are often carried out in remote terrain.
The partnership agreement, sealed last week between Phoenicia Group affiliate Al-Waha IT & Telecommunications and Houston-based CapRock Communications, comprises the deployment of onshore and offshore VSAT terminals to support exploration programs of oil and gas majors prospecting in the country, and will include 24X7 network monitoring, technical support, and provisioning.
Ryad Sunusi, President & CEO of the privately-held Phoenicia Group and a prominent Libyan businessman and consultant, in a prepared statement, said:
“With an installed user base of over 350 VSAT terminals in Libya for government, military, and corporate clients based on iDirect TDMA and SCPC technologies and as the recognized leading IT company in Libya, we believe in forming alliances and partnerships with market leaders abroad in their respective fields, and this is the case with CapRock, whose dedication and experience in the VSAT market will complement our own activities and result in increased business generation.”
“By embarking on this strategic and unique corporate alliance, Phoenicia Group and CapRock will join forces to create a dynamic and forward-looking relationship, embodying innovation, reliability, enterprise, skill, and adaptability; bringing clients the very best services; and ensuring mutual development and business potential and growth.”
Phoenicia Group, through its affiliate Al-Waha IT & Telecommunications, is the sole licensed private satellite Internet and telecommunications provider in Libya, and offers military, government, and corporate clients in Libya a range of services, including VSAT, IT Consultancy, Disaster Management, VHF&HF, Microwave, Security, Wireless, and VOIP solutions.
“This strategic alliance with Al-Waha IT and Telecommunications places CapRock Communications in an excellent position to serve the Libyan market, giving our customers the local assurance they need to receive a reliable telecommunication solution to support their operations in Libya,” said Peter Shaper, CEO of CapRock Communications.
“Many of our customers have been looking for a telecommunications solution in Libya for several years, and through this alliance, CapRock is pleased to offer this solution,” continued Shaper.
Satellite Internet uptake in Libya is on the rise, due to limited and expensive Internet connectivity and infrastructure, download bandwidth restrictions on broadband Internet connections, and slow speeds, and is closely regulated by the GPTC, the government telecommunications body, which heavily fines companies using VSATs installed by unlicensed parties, and which offers its own newly-launched VSAT service, based on the aging DVB-RCS and Nera technology.
Sunusi cautions international companies and expatriates in Libya to practice due diligence and be wary of unlicensed parties who claim they offer satellite Internet and telecommunications services, as contracting with unlicensed parties results in fines and other legal consequences.
GPC Decision 196/2004, an executive decree by Libya’s General People’s Committee, makes it illegal for unlicensed foreign or local companies to offer VSAT and communications solutions in Libya.
